a quick share...

Not much time to play today, but I wanted to share this with you. It's simple and plain, but it's so very me. When I finished this a few weeks back, I realized I'd finally found my digital scrappin' groove.

Christmas1976

* supplies: free kit from 2peas (Betsy Tuma Snow Kissed Christmas); kraft cardstock, label, photo frame and staples from Designer Digitals (KPertiet); painted heart from Paislee Press.

.....

Life is busy here. Lots going on with the kids and with the grown-ups too. We love the holidays and try not to stress too much. I don't like overdoing it, and the boys are great in not expecting too much. We'll do what we have time to do, and we'll enjoy one another's company in the process.

School activities, work parties, family gatherings... that's what we have this week. I hope you're enjoying the holiday season too. :)

random holiday things

Well, I'm way too tired to compose a coherent post that flows smoothly from one topic to the next, but there's stuff I want to share here, so consider yourself warned. Holiday-themed brain dump ahead.

Bought an awesome Christmas album called Holiday Spirits from Straight No Chaser from the iTunes store on the weekend. I loved it, especially the unexpected touch of the 80s on this track:

As I sang along with different renditions of Christmas carols all weekend, I was reminded of how much I loved to sing when I was younger. I sang in both junior and senior choirs at church. I sang in Brownies and Guides. I sang all the time, and now, I hardly ever get to sing. I'm going to have to find a way to remedy that. :)

We had a family dinner at John and Jackie's on Sunday. It was the third night of Hanukkah, and the boys were both really excited to help light the candles. All three families (Mark's, Bill's and Jackie's) had their menorahs on the table, so there were plenty of candles to light.

Festival-lights

I went to my friend, Marcia's house for a holiday celebration on Monday evening. It was the first women's night she's hosted in a while. We used to get together every month, but it's been different since one of the members of the inner circle of friends was diagnosed with cancer 13 months ago and then lost her battle with cancer earlier this fall. I almost didn't go... I had lots of excuses lined up (I had to study... it was snowing... Thomas needed me to work through a few things with him...) but in the end, I decided I needed a hug, and I needed to give hugs to try to move past the sadness I felt. I'm not sure how successful I was in moving past the sadness, but I think it was a step in the right direction.

I love the colour in Marcia's hair... I wonder if I could do that in mine. :)

Marcia

I haven't really had a chance to scrapbook lately... things just got busy on the weekend. We took the boys shopping for food for their school's canned food drive. They chose food from all the different food groups, and then they posed for this picture:

Donation

I printed a similar photo (one without the goofy faces) so they could tell John and Jackie about what they did. In fact, I told the boys that we were donating to the food bank in honour of John and Jackie instead of buying them a gift that they didn't really need. Seeing how J&J are constantly volunteering for one community organization or another, they love this idea and appreciated the gesture. The boys really enjoyed it too, and I think we'll make a habit of this, even when there's not a special campaign going on at their school.

Not much else happening in my world lately. I'm hoping I'll have time to get in the spirit of the season soon. I'm starting to run out of time. Yikes!

weekend To Do list

Here's my To Do list... it's in no particular order because some of it will be obvious and other things can be done whenever. Some of it's fun. Other stuff, not so much fun.

  • Go to the gym for the Power Hour class this morning. I have an hour and a half to blog, eat, have a couple cups of coffee and get dressed to go.
  • Put together daycare newsletter. Easy. I reformatted it last time, so it's 100% to my liking, so I only have to edit the text and find some holiday clip art, and we're good to go.
  • Find important paperwork buried under scrapbook supplies on my desk. Fill in forms and mail paperwork away. Wait for money to arrive in mail.
  • Study. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to hold exams for a job competition just a week before Christmas. AND they gave us less than one week's notice. I won't tell you what I really think. lol
  • Groceries and laundry. Even if all the other chores get put off until after my exams, these two cannot. If nothing else, we need to have clean clothes to wear and decent food to eat. Right now, we're running perilously low on both.

You know what? I think I'm going to stop there. Anything else I might add would be wishful thinking at this point. At least I can recognize that, right? <sigh>

Before I go, here's a little something I made yesterday.

Have a great weekend, everyone! :)

snow storm and Chinese food

Okay, we had our first real snow of the season, and wow, what  a LOT of snow we had! The school buses were cancelled, but the boys wanted to go to school anyway... because in Ontario, the schools stay open, even when the buses don't run. Go figure! Oh well, Thomas and James had a good day with a lot of outdoor play, and I managed to get to work for a few hours in the morning before heading back to the school for pick-up.

It snowed all day here, and it didn't stop until well past dinnertime, but that didn't stop a group of friends and I from getting together for dinner at the Chinese restaurant down the street. We talked and laughed and ate and laughed some more. I love these friends. A lot of them are people I met at a local playgroup while I was on maternity leave with James... six years later, and we all still keep in touch. Times like this, I think I need to slow down and hang out with my friends more often, but that would mean they would need to do the same. It's challenging trying to strike a balance between family and work obligations and girlfriend time. Hopefully we'll be able to do this again without waiting 18 months!

I wish I'd taken a photo... I had my camera, but by the time I remembered, it didn't feel right. Sometimes I have a hard time being "that crazy camera lady."

......

You know, there are days when I'm totally in LOVE with digital, like the day I made this.

November-birthdays

Then there are other days when I feel like a total digital dunce, like yesterday when I ended up having to print the photo collage from my digital page in progress, and then go back to my paper and glue supplies to finish it. The good news is, one of my FAVOURITE companies will allow me to have the best of both worlds... as of  tomorrow, BasicGrey will have digital scrapbooking supplies. I am so STINKIN' excited. Yay!

......

Okay, it's way too late. I've gotta get myself to bed. Night, all! :)

non-scrapbook related (nsbr) stuff

In case my non-scrapbooking friends are afraid I've abandoned my life outside the world of scrapbooking, I'm dedicating this post to all things nsbr.

Blog-nsbr

** Piano lessons - James is still loving them, and he practices on his own without too many reminders on our part. His teacher says he's one of the fastest learners she's ever taught, and when I go to pick him up, I can hear him chatting away happily with her as he works through his pieces. He still loves to pick out catchy little tunes he hears (like the theme song from Super Mario Bros), and he's big on adding chords to the melody lines as he plays the simplified versions of Christmas songs in his beginner level book.

** Both the boys brought home amazing report cards last week. Lots and lots of As and a few Bs... and only one C+ for Thomas because "I don't really feel comfortable dancing, Mom." Oh well, we can't all be good at EVERYthing, right? :P

** Mike and I attended parent-teacher interviews last Thursday, and neither teacher had any concerns about the boys' academics, but we did talk about different ways to keep them engaged in class and well-socialized at recess time. I don't remember having such a hard time with recess as a kid... I remember LOVING it, but both my boys seem to have difficulties with the free-for-all on the playground. With Thomas, it's the lack of rules and structure that get to him. And James... well, he'd just rather be reading or folding origami! lol

** The fall session of the boys' tennis lessons is over, and they both made amazing progress during the past 12 weeks. I think that having them take two lessons a week has made all the difference in the world. They are improving more than twice as fast as they would have with just one lesson a week... it's all about repetition and allowing the muscles to remember what they're supposed to do. I love that both of them look like real tennis players now. The best part of the program, in my mind, is the discipline and respect they're taught. I can't say enough good things about the coaches at the tennis school.

** The first real snowfall is upon is, and it seems that bad timing is the name of the game here. The zipper that attaches the hood to Thomas' jacket started to come apart, so last week, I finally sewed it up where it ripped, just as a temporary fix. The manager of the store where I bought it said that he'd get it fixed for me, but I'd need to give him at least 48 hours to turn it around. Ummmm, okay... it's wintertime in Ottawa... that might be tricky. Well, that jacket with the temporarily sewn-on hood fell apart even further today. The main zipper on the front of the jacket stopped working, and Thomas was walking around with an unzipped jacket, exclaiming "Superman!" <sigh>

** Did you know that Old Navy is currently having a 40% off sale on all their Frost-Free jackets? Perfect timing! I found a three-in-one jacket in size 10-12, and even better, it's a colour that my nine-year old won't complain about wearing. Go me!

** I have stopped spending money like it grows on trees... or at the very least, I'm trying not to do it as often, but I have a hard time saying no to the boys when they come home with those darned Scholastic Book Order forms. I let them choose their own books, and I usually limit it to one book per kid each month (although James is encouraged to choose one French title and one English), but some months, they come home with a huge stack of books that barely fit on their already overcrowded bookshelves. Oh well, I'm not complaining... each of them had his nose buried in a book right up until it was time for lights-out.

:)

Well, if you've made it this far, congratulations! You must be either (a) related to me or (b) one of my non-scrapbooking friends who's been waiting to hear about those other people who live in my house. Either way, thanks for visiting my blog... I appreciate it.

weekend review

So it's Monday (again). Why is it that weekends go by so quickly anyway?! Oh well... I thought I'd share a few weekend happenings with you.

:)

Blog-run

That's me with my buddy, Marlene, at the Santa Shuffle fun run on Saturday. We had a nice chat as we ran the 5K, and she kept me honest at the post-run food table where I only grabbed one cookie and one banana... because, quite honestly, I could have easily eaten four or five cookies, thereby consuming more calories that we'd just burned running that 5K. ;)

......

Thomas lost his 9th tooth on Sunday morning. It's funny... I think he's caught in the stage between believing and not believing, even though Mike tried to tell the boys the real deal about Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and all those other creatures that visit our house in the middle of the night. I suppose it's hard to let go of something you've believed in for so long. Or maybe he's afraid if he says he no longer believes, he won't get that two dollars under his pillow any longer. Who knows?!

......

I made a card on the weekend. I actually made a few of them, and they all pretty much look like this:

2009-Christmas1

* BasicGrey paper scraps, Prima background stamp (letters), Stampin' Up! sentiment stamp and paper punch set, K and Company ink pad and Karen Foster scrapper's floss

......

The boys went to a hockey game with their dad and grandfather on Sunday afternoon, and I stayed home all by myself. I had planned to bake some muffins and brownies while they were away, but I did some work instead. Oh well, there are fewer calories involved in reading what I wrote compared to eating what I might have baked!

......

So it's Monday, the first day of what will be a busy week for me. I'm looking forward to a few social gatherings this week, at work and  with some neighbourhood friends. Thanks for dropping by to visit, and have a great week! :)

Dear Diane...

... and Nicole and all you other southern hemisphere gals:

I am envious that it is spring/almost summer where you guys are. Don't get me wrong - I like having different seasons, and I don't really mind winter because I have the proper gear (jacket, hat, scarf, mittens, boots and travel mug filled with coffee), but our winters are a wee bit too long here, with snow on the ground from December 'til March. So yes, I'm a bit envious of the mid-twenty temperatures you're experiencing.

But really, I wouldn't want it to warm up again until after Christmas because there's just something magical about having fresh snow on the ground on Christmas morning. :)

For the record, we've had practically no snow here yet this year. It snowed on Monday and Tuesday, but the ground was not frozen, so the snow melted shortly after hitting the ground. It'll come soon enough though. It always does.

......

Speaking of Christmas, it just hasn't hit me that it's less than three weeks away. I think it's the aforementioned lack of snow that's making it less real for me, but I'm working away at it, buying gifts for the boys and scrapping pages for my mom and dad's gift album. I started super-early this year, so it's nearly done. Here's one of the three pages I made yesterday:

Milkshake

That photo of Thomas makes me giggle. I have to say, I LOVE the way the picture turned out. I didn't want to use my flash, and so it was tricky playing with it in Photoshop Elements, trying to compensate for the energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs we have throughout the house. The Scenic Route paper is four years old, and the Imagination Project Gin X rub-on letters are three years old... crazy, eh?

......

Sunday morning here, and I have a zillion things I'd like to get done today, so I'd best get off the computer before it's too late. Thanks for visiting! :)

goooooood morning!

Hey, it's Saturday already, and it looks like it's going to be a lovely weekend. :)

Weather

.....

I managed to sleep in this morning, meaning I slept past 6:30, the time our alarm clock would normally go off during the week, and I'm feeling ready to face the weekend. Go me! All I need is some coffee and... oh, I need a decent breakfast this morning (more nutritiously balanced than usual) because Marlene and I are headed off to run in the Santa Shuffle this morning. :)

Before I go, I'm going to post the winner of the Ella giveaway two posts down. I closed the comments this morning and used the website that everyone else seems to use (what a cool website that is!), and the winner of Ella's Vintage Hip Christmas Crafts is...

Random

... commenter no. 2: Krista.

Krista, I already have your email address and will be in touch as soon as I get the code from Ella. If anyone else is still interested in owning a copy of Vintage Hip Christmas Crafts, you can order it here and use the code CRAFTY09 to save 25%.

Have a great weekend, everyone! :)

the endless To Do list...

My To Do list always consists of way more things to do than I'd ever be able to get done in a single day, so it's kept in my head and not on paper because, well, it would be a little depressing to keep a running list of things I know I'll never have time to finish. I do write lists at work, only because I am too forgetful to leave it to memory, but at home, my list is usually just a jumbled-up mess of thoughts. I will cave and make a real list when I get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff that needs to be done, but more often than not, I am without a paper list.

And my husband... well, he hears the word "list" and goes running in the other direction. lol

......

Does anyone care to speculate where this boy got his list-loving tendencies?

Blog-list

......

Here's a small sampling of what's on my To Do list in the next week or so:

  • an assignment for Ella Publishing
  • create a few more 8x8 pages for my mom and dad's gift album
  • make Christmas cards
  • organize charitable donation at work...  baskets filled with household goods (utensils, linens, cookware, etc.) to help homeless men after they find housing
  • a new project at work
  • put together newsletter for daycare
  • a fun run on Saturday morning with my friend, Marlene
  • laundry... a never-ending battle at my house
  • school council meeting
  • dinner with some girlfriends

It's actually not as busy as other Decembers past, and I'm grateful for that. :)

......

P.S. Don't forget to leave a comment on my previous post for a chance to win the latest eBook from Ella, Vintage Hip Christmas Crafts.
